Welcome to Thrive, your destination for online therapy around the country.
Dr. Emily Hu is a licensed clinical psychologist in California (Lic # PSY28542) and Washington State (Lic # PY60665188) who firmly believes that every woman deserves fulfillment and peace of mind regardless of her goals, expectations, and past experiences. As such, Dr. Hu enjoys helping her clients come to terms with their past and take charge of their present to build richer and brighter futures.
Dr. Hu’s clients love her warmth, compassion, and easygoing, friendly personality that helps them feel heard and cared for no matter what struggles they are having. She has a great sense of humor and has been known to drop the occasional geeky sci-fi reference in session. In the immortal words of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, “Things are only impossible until they are not.”
Dr. Hu brings to the table almost a decade of experience with evidence-based interventions such as CBT, ACT, and mindfulness to ensure positive change and emotional well-being.
Dr. Hu specializes in treating trauma, including childhood and adult abuse and assault. She has dedicated much of her career to helping clients make meaning of and grow from difficult experiences and is trained in multiple proven trauma treatments including Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, and EMDR. In addition, she enjoys helping clients with other life struggles including addictive behaviors, relationship difficulties, perfectionism, life transitions, grief, depression, anxiety, and many other things. Dr. Hu also takes a holistic approach to treatment, often encouraging her clients to explore adjunct therapies such as yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and physical exercise in order to nourish the body as well as the mind.
Dr. Hu is also a strong advocate for historically marginalized communities. She enjoys empowering clients who identify as minorities, particularly people of color and members of the QUILTBAG community. She operates from an affirmative therapy perspective that recognizes that people of color and LGBTQ+ folks experience unique stressors and struggles that stem from navigating a world that often silences their voices. As such, she doesn’t shy away from discussing difficult topics such as shame, guilt, and anger, while simultaneously also helping her clients foster independence, self-confidence, and love.
In her free time, Dr. Hu enjoys reading, rock climbing, and trying new baking recipes with limited success. She is a single mother by choice (SMBC) to her daughter.
"I'm not afraid to have the hard conversations, especially around justice and oppression, even when they might bring up feelings of hurt and vulnerability for everyone in the room including myself." - Emily Hu, Ph.D
